Sooksai Kaewbua

Sooksai Kaewbua,  DNP, APRN, PMHNP-BC: Dr. Kaewbua is originally from Thailand, where she did a B.S. in Economics and worked in business. She decided to change careers and earned her B.S. in Nursing from Murray State University. Since then, she has been working in psychiatric nursing settings, both inpatient and outpatient, including working with veterans and patients of all ages with mental illnesses. She earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), Psychiatric/Mental-Health track from the University of Kentucky, earning the prestigious Sebastian/Stanhope Award. Her research focuses on the relationship between physical and mental health. Her doctoral research project was titled “Evaluation of the “Healthy-Heart, Healthy-Brain (H3B) Program”, which is an educational program she created for inpatient mental-health patients. Her project received the 2015 Saha Award for Cardiovascular Research and Education (Paula Fritz Award) from the University of Kentucky’s Saha Cardiovascular Research Center. She co-published a research paper focused on tobacco addiction treatment titled “Factors associated with staff engagement in patients’ tobacco treatment in a state psychiatric facility” (link: She is the current President of the Kentucky Chapter of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association. She devotes her free time to spending time with her friends, dogs, and family, including her baby daughter, to volunteering for various charitable organizations, and to cooking and trying foods from around the world.
